Ideas

Things I want to exist. Some are half built, some are only a sentence. None of them are promises. If one of these is already yours, or you want to argue with it, write to saugatfiguresitout@gmail.com.

A shield two people share

Two people in the same house, on the same shield, at the same hour. Not to police each other. Just so the pause is a thing the room does rather than a thing one person does while the other scrolls. The hard part is doing it without inventing a leaderboard.

A pause that hears you breathe

Breath detection works today by camera, which is the wrong instrument for a thing you do in the dark at 2am. Sound is the better one. It is also much harder, because a microphone that listens for breathing has to prove, to a stranger, that it is not listening for anything else.

Notifications that never guilt you

Every app I have deleted, I deleted after a notification implied I owed it something. So the rule here is that a reminder may say what is true and may say nothing at all, and may never mention how long you have been away. Most of the writing time goes into the messages I decided not to send.

A widget with nothing to say

A home screen widget that is blank when there is nothing worth reporting. No number, no ring, no percentage. The interesting design question is whether anyone keeps a widget that is usually empty, and I suspect the answer says more about the person than the widget.

The honest uninstall

A screen that helps you leave. If reCalm has done its job you should need it less over time, and an app that hides its own exit has already picked a side. I have not built this one and I keep finding reasons not to, which is how I know it is the right idea.

About this page

This is an ideas page. The convention comes from Derek Sivers by way of aboutideasnow.com: keep a public list of what you want to exist, and let people find you through it.
