Cognitive offloading is using something outside your head to do mental work your head would otherwise do. A shopping list. A calendar reminder. A knot in a handkerchief. Counting on your fingers. It is one of the oldest things humans do and it is usually a straightforwardly good idea.

The phone version is the same behaviour at a scale nobody has lived with before.

What the research actually found

The best known result is the 2011 study by Sparrow, Liu and Wegner, popularly called the Google effect. People who were told information would be saved remembered the information less well, and remembered where to find it better.

That is the whole finding, and it is more interesting than the headlines it produced. Memory did not get worse. It reallocated. The system stored the pointer instead of the content, which is exactly what an efficient system should do when the content is reliably retrievable.

Later work has complicated it in both directions. Offloading reliably frees capacity for the task in front of you. It also reliably reduces retention of the offloaded item. Both are true and they are the same trade.

When it is a good trade

Almost always, when three things hold:

The thing is genuinely retrievable. A phone number you can look up costs nothing to forget.

You did not need it internalised. Knowing where the plumber's number is beats knowing the number.

The freed capacity gets used. The point of the list is to think about something else.

Nobody sensible argues against calendars.

When it is a bad trade

When the retrieval is not reliable. A note in an app you will not open is not offloading, it is discarding.

When the material was the point. Understanding is built from things held simultaneously in mind. You cannot look up the thing you needed to have available in order to notice the connection. This is why offloading a phone number is free and offloading the argument of a chapter is not.

When the freed capacity goes to the feed. This is the common case and it is the one worth naming. Offloading is a good trade because it releases attention for something better. If the released attention goes into a scroll, you paid the retention cost and bought nothing.

The version that is not a trade at all

There is a second thing hiding under the same word: not offloading a fact, but offloading the unstructured moment.

A queue, a lift, a pause in a conversation. Historically those were where loose thoughts got connected, because nothing else was assigned to them. Filling every one of them with a feed does not offload a task, since there was no task. It removes the only unallocated time in a day.

That is a plausible part of the state described in popcorn brain, and the moment itself is described in the urge to check your phone. The cost of the switch is attention residue. The specific case of doing it during a film is second screening.
