What is the intention gap? The intention gap is the distance between what someone means to do and what they actually do. On a phone it has a specific shape: you open an app for one reason, and leave forty minutes later having done something else entirely, with no memory of deciding to.
Researchers usually call this the intention behaviour gap, and it is one of the better documented findings in behaviour change. Intention is a weak predictor of action on its own. The environment around the action predicts better.
Why the phone widens it
Three things stretch the gap wider than usual here.
The first is that the opening move is not a decision. The hand arrives at the app before any intention is formed, which is the pattern in picking up the phone without deciding.
The second is that the original intention, if there was one, is satisfied in about four seconds. You wanted to check one thing. You checked it. Everything after that is the app's agenda, not yours.
The third is that nothing ever signals completion. There is no last page, so there is no moment where the gap becomes visible while it is still small.
Why more resolve does not close it
Resolve operates before the moment. The gap opens during it. By the time the difference between plan and behaviour is noticeable, twenty minutes have already gone, and the person noticing is not the person who made the plan.
This is why the standard advice fails so consistently, and the reasoning is set out in the fix isn't trying harder.
What actually narrows it
Something that arrives inside the moment rather than before it. A prompt at the point of opening turns an unexamined reach into a question with an answer. The answer is often still yes, and that is not a failure. A conscious yes is not the same event as an unconscious forty minutes, even when both end with the app open.
The mechanism is described in what happens when we interrupt.
The version you can install
reCalm places that question at the exact point the gap opens. Shield Instagram, and the next reach meets one breath before the feed. The answer is allowed to be yes; the gap only ever widened because there was no question at all. The prompt is attached to the app rather than to a clock, so it never arrives at a wrong moment and never interrupts the use you meant. It asks nothing else, keeps no score, and stands down by itself after 15 minutes if you ignore it. That is the entire feature, because the gap is the entire problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the intention gap the same as procrastination?
Not quite. Procrastination is avoiding a specific task you intend to do. The intention gap is broader, and includes doing something you never intended at all. They overlap often, particularly in bedtime procrastination.
Does setting a clearer intention help?
A little, and more if the intention names a time and a place rather than a wish. Implementation intentions, phrased as if this happens, then I do that, hold up better than general resolutions. They still work best alongside something that changes the environment.
Can an app close the gap for me?
An app cannot decide for you. It can put a question where there was no question, at the moment the gap opens rather than an hour before. That is the whole of what a pause does, and it is more than it sounds.
