Attention residue is the portion of your attention still occupied by a previous task after you have moved to a new one. You have closed the app and opened the document. Some part of you is still in the app, and the document gets whatever is left.

The term comes from research by Sophie Leroy on task switching, which found that people performed measurably worse on a new task when the previous one had been interrupted rather than finished. The residue is heaviest when the earlier task was left unresolved.

Why a two minute check costs more than two minutes

The phone check itself is short. The recovery is not.

A feed is unresolved by construction. There is no end, no completion, nothing that signals you finished. So the residue it leaves is the heavy kind: an unfinished thing your attention keeps returning to without being asked.

Estimates of full recovery vary widely by study and task, and the commonly quoted twenty three minute figure is much shakier than its confident repetition suggests. The direction is well supported even where the number is not. The cost is real and it is several times the length of the interruption.

Why it is worse with a phone than with a colleague

An interruption from a person has an ending. They ask, you answer, they leave. The task closes.
